Description

Delicious and flaky chocolate hazelnut scones topped with a mocha glaze.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups flour
  • 6 tbsp sugar
  • 2 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup butter, frozen
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup semi sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup chocolate covered hazelnuts or plain roasted hazelnuts
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 23 tbsp half and half
  • 1/2 tsp instant espresso granules

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400F and put baking rack in the middle of the oven. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, add flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Grate the frozen butter on a cheese grater or in a food processor. Add grated butter to flour mixture and cut with a pastry knife or mix with fork and fingers until coarse.
  4. In a small bowl, stir together heavy cream, egg, and vanilla extract. Add to flour mixture and stir until well combined. Fold in the hazelnuts and chocolate chips.
  5. Dough will be a little wet. Form dough into a ball and flatten to about 8″ diameter and place onto the cookie sheet on top of the parchment paper. Cut into 8 equal wedges.
  6. Bake for 20-25 minutes.
  7. Meanwhile, make the mocha glaze. In a small bowl, stir together the powdered sugar, half and half and instant espresso granules until smooth. Pour on top of the baked scones.
