Delicious and flaky chocolate hazelnut scones topped with a mocha glaze.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups flour
- 6 tbsp sugar
- 2 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup butter, frozen
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 large egg
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup semi sweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup chocolate covered hazelnuts or plain roasted hazelnuts
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2–3 tbsp half and half
- 1/2 tsp instant espresso granules
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400F and put baking rack in the middle of the oven. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, add flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- Grate the frozen butter on a cheese grater or in a food processor. Add grated butter to flour mixture and cut with a pastry knife or mix with fork and fingers until coarse.
- In a small bowl, stir together heavy cream, egg, and vanilla extract. Add to flour mixture and stir until well combined. Fold in the hazelnuts and chocolate chips.
- Dough will be a little wet. Form dough into a ball and flatten to about 8″ diameter and place onto the cookie sheet on top of the parchment paper. Cut into 8 equal wedges.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes.
- Meanwhile, make the mocha glaze. In a small bowl, stir together the powdered sugar, half and half and instant espresso granules until smooth. Pour on top of the baked scones.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, use high-quality chocolate chips.
