Description

A delightful layered dessert featuring red velvet cake, rich custard, and fresh berries, topped with whipped cream.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 red velvet cake (store-bought or homemade)
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup strawberries, sliced
  • 1 cup blackberries
  • 1 cup blueberries
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Fresh mint leaves for garnish
  • Optional: White chocolate shavings for decoration

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cake: Bake or buy a red velvet cake and let it cool. Crumble the cake into small pieces.
  2. Make the Custard: In a saucepan, heat milk and heavy cream over medium heat. In a separate bowl, mix sugar and cornstarch. Add the dry mixture into the milk and cream, stirring constantly until thickened. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract. Let the custard cool to room temperature.
  3. Prepare the Whipped Cream: In a mixing bowl, beat heavy cream, sugar, and vanilla extract until soft peaks form.
  4. Assemble the Trifle: In a large glass bowl, start with a layer of crumbled red velvet cake. Add a layer of custard over the cake. Layer mixed berries on top of the custard. Repeat layering until ingredients are used, finishing with a custard layer. Top with whipped cream and garnish with fresh berries, mint leaves, and optional white chocolate shavings.

Notes

  • Ensure the custard is completely cooled before layering to prevent melting the whipped cream.
  • Chill the trifle for at least 1-2 hours before serving to allow flavors to meld.
  • For an extra tang, you can add a layer of berry jam or lemon curd between the cake layers.
  • Adjust the sugar according to the sweetness of the berries you choose.
